Notice of first concert of season
Dear Friends (with apologies for any duplication: many contacts did not get the first message)
It is Fall again already, and we are happy to bring to your attention three concerts in the Shaftesbury Salon Series for 2019-2020. Those of you who were present at our final concert for the previous season last May will remember that we announced the line-up for the coming season then. To jog your memories, here are the dates for your calendars:
November 11, 2019: Fire and Grace
March 16, 2020: Mirror Visions Ensemble
April 27, 2020: Sheng Cai, pianist
And now for some details about our first concert on 11 November.
Fire and Grace is a collaboration between Canadian violinist Edwin Huizinga and American guitarist William Coulter. They are a unique duo who explore connections between classical, folk and other contemporary traditions from around the world.
Edwin has toured with Taffelmusik and been featured on CBC Radio. He has appeared beside Yo-Yo Ma, Itzhak Perlman, Renée Fleming, Dawn Upshaw and Stevie Wonder! He has also been featured as a soloist at the Banff Summer Arts Festival. This coming season he will appear as conductor and soloist with the Guelph Symphony Orchestra.
William is an internationally acclaimed, Grammy award-winning master of the steel-stringed guitar. He has been Music Director for Tomaseen Foley’s A Celtic Christmas since 1998 and has performed with the Santa Cruz Baroque Festival, Apollo’s Fire and many other ensembles. William teaches classical guitar at UC Santa Cruz.
Together, they have played in the U.S., New Zealand, Ireland, Australia as well as here in Canada, among many other places. Their programs encompass a vast repertoire, ranging from the baroque (Bach, Vivaldi) to Celtic, European and American (North and South) folk tunes, played with stunning virtuosity and passion – hence their Fire-and-Grace moniker.
Here at the Shaftesbury Salon Series concert their program will include Bach, Piazzola, Vivaldi and traditional Irish and Bulgarian tunes – something for everyone!
